When Luxury, Art, Innovation and Sustainable Development are committed to an opening world, that’s the gamble paid off the 3rd edition of 1.618 Sustainable Luxury which ended on Sunday, the 1st of april 2012, in full bloom during 4 days: the press, the public and professionals came together to celebrate the new 1.618 luxury, more ethic, creative, essential and immaterial. 2012 also demonstrates how The 1.618 Community keeps growing year by year.
Oskar Metsavaht at the heart of the event
Oskar Metsavaht, the sponsor of this 3rd edition, delighted us with his presence during the entire event. Highly forthcoming, he perfectly took on the role of sponsor, responding to the numerous solicitations with enthusiasm and elegance. The founder of Osklen and the instituto e is the true embodiment of the new luxury as dreamed of by 1.618.
OSKLEN rewarded by « HEC & 1.618 Sustainable Luxury Award »
The « HEC & 1.618 Sustainable Luxury » award recognizes the most creative and audacious sustainable development approaches among the 1.618 exhibitors. It was awarded this year to the Brazilian brand OSKLEN, represented by its creator and 1.618 sponsor, Oskar Metsavaht. He won an HEC academic training session, a work by the artist Dani Dan and free exhibition space for the next edition of 1.618.
The “Coup de Coeur” Prize went to the Jacques Rougeries Foundation for its work in favor of the protection of seabed ecosystems.
V+ Volteis by Starck received the Visitor’s Choice Award
During the 4 days of the event, visitors could vote for the products they found the most desirable. A draw took place on Sunday, April 1st and as 3 visitors received amazing prizes, V+ Volteis by Starck received the Visitor’s Choice Award.
Another highlight of the event was the presentation of Hidroex- Cidade das Aguas, the Brazilian city of water co-founded by Unesco. 1.618 was the opportunity to officialize the city’s research program and to meet potential sponsors, while raising awareness among the public.
Far from traditionnal fair trades, 1.618 Sustainable Luxury since its creation, has the ambition to surprise, innovate. That’s why we are very proud to have brought together a representative panel of what we love for the 2012 edition of 1.618: companies with exemplary ethics, foundations with innovative projects, and partners committed to a future that is more respectful of mankind and the environment!
Thanks to those that were actively taking part in sustainability and made the success of this 3rd edition possible.
See you soon for further adventures!

Cidade das Águas, an international brand new project to protect water resources
Located in the largest freshwater body of the world (in the State of Minas Gerais)
and under the aegis of UNESCO and Hidroex, this “city of water” will gather state
and federal institutions, as well as Brazilian and international companies devoted to water protection.
All organizations, which will set up in this City, will aim at the recovery, the management
and the protection of water, as well as the education and the training of the next generation of leaders in water protection.
The project of the “Cidade das águas” stems from a joint proposal by the government
of Minas Gerais and the federal government. It also receives invaluable support
from UNESCO.
The overall budget is estimated at over 100 millions euros: 24 millions for the
construction and 80 millions that will be invested over the next 2 years.
Two very talented Brazilian teams of architects have been chosen to carry out this
large-scale building site: Jaime Lerner Associated Architects and In Cubus Architects.
A project coordinated by the Hidroex Institute and Unesco that is already leading some exceptional initiatives
The Hidroex Institute is a foundation of the state of Minas Gerais attached to the
ministry of science, technology and higher education.
Hidroex was the first organization to settle in the City of water, its headquarters having
been inaugurated last September. It now includes 3 research laboratories, 7 conferences
rooms and one multimedia space.
It has several main objectives
- planning, coordinating, executing, controlling and evaluating programs and projects
of protection and conservation of the environment related to water manage
ment and aquatic resources;
- promoting educative actions;
- setting up databases, to be used as scientific references at an international level.
The UNESCO directly manages the strategy of installation of the Hidroex Institute.
You will discover the “Cidade das àguas-Unesco Hidroex international project” 1.618’s partner, that will be featured in an exceptional conference on Friday, March 30th at 16:30 pm.

The unusual journey of a doctor who became a reference in fashion.
Oskar Metsavaht’s career path is truly original. He was first a doctor before becoming the head of one of the world’s most powerful companies!
Oskar was trained as an orthopaedist doctor. A dedicated athlete, he became frustrated when unable to find clothes adapted to his favourite sport, mountaineering. He thus decided to create his own clothes in new materials, more adapted to harsh conditions, particularly those in the mountains. The technical quality of his clothes was an immediate success with the adventurers and sportsmen in Oskar’s circle, encouraging him to launch his own brand. OSKLEN was thus created in 1988.
Right from the start, the brand was a huge hit. It has now become a reference in Brazil (62 brand-name stores today) as well as in many other cities (New York, Tokyo, Paris, Miami, Milan, Buenos Aires…). According to the WGSN, it is one of the 10 most powerful and inspiring brands in the world and WWF-UK named Oskar Metsavaht a pioneering and avant-garde “Future maker”.
One of the reasons for OSKLEN’s success lies in its own history: it carries within it the very contrasts that characterize the men and women that it dresses, between urban and nature, technology and ecology.
